Pilgrimage

Blind men should not make pilgrimage
to breaking waters on zealous feet,
piety will make them stick elbows in the wet,
their devotion will be answered with grains
rough between teeth, metal on their gums;
they will steal divine wealth in cups,
clutch water like a lover's last kiss,
make trips until all of their soil
is seeped with the fine and the coarse
of bodies they never drank once,
and they shall wait on lean haunches
for bountiful harvests come winter;
The difference between salt and silt

is starvation.
